Give: Wizard's Wardrobe - #donateyourmiles

June 30, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Life, Give

With my final June run done it’s time to pause, count the miles and donate to something that is making a huge change in my local community. This month I racked up 150 miles and will be sending $150 dollars on to a South End children’s literacy program called Wizards Wardrobe…

Race: 2020 Dodge the Deer 5k

June 27, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Races

It has been a strange, strange year this year. I had run one race in 2020 thus far and it was the Hangover Half Marathon on New Years Day. Every other race I had been keeping my eyes on had been cancelled or got postponed and then cancelled. One of my friends had told me about this 5k called Dodge the Deer and that it was not going to be cancelled and I tried to register, only to find that registration was closed. I was kinda bummed as I had been looking forward to running some kind of race, but this looked like another casualty of COVID-19. Turns out, the organizers (AREEP) were trying hard to find a way to make it all work within all the guidelines of the state…

Will Virtual Races Replace the Physical Race? I Don't Think So

June 23, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Races

Before COVID-19, social distancing, smothering face masks and every single race getting cancelled, I had never given running a virtual race a single thought. In fact, the whole idea of it seemed ridiculous to me, but after every single race got cancelled, this turned into my only option. I started researching virtual races, got excited about running a virtual race and then I fizzled out. There was no hook, motivation, accuracy or endorphin rush from the virtual races. Here are my thoughts on why I don’t think virtual races will ever replace the physical race…

Kit: Virtual Boston Marathon 2020

June 22, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Gear

It’s old and very sad news that the physical Boston Marathon for 2020 has been cancelled. How many more good things in life can the Coronavirus ruin for us runners. Not to say that this is really the worst thing that is happening right now. I wish everything could be shut down until humans start treating each other with love and equity, instead of the crap racism that’s been on for far too long. Things would change pretty dang quick if that were the case, but it’s not ☹️. Before you purchase more running clothes, I’d encourage you to donate some money to things that create lasting change in your community…

Nose Breathing Hot Take (Part 2) - Heart Rate

June 21, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Training

I’ve been reading articles about what nose breathing is supposed to do regarding heart rate, and it seems that they are contradictory. Some have said that it helps lower heart rate, while others indicate it increases heart rate. I previously wrote that nose breathing is supposed to naturally reduce heart rate, but I’m not fully convinced of that anymore. Heart rate seems to mostly track with my effort. Using my nose helps reduce pace, reducing overall effort, which in turn reduces heart rate…

Four Years In the Making or More Like 15

June 18, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Life

4 years ago Brad Smith and I embarked upon a journey to transform Simplecast from one of the many fledgling podcasting hosts to something much greater. The world of podcasting looked very different back then, although most of the core aspects of podcasting continue to remain unchanged. While Simplecast was a new venture for Brad and I, we’ve known each other for close to 14 years. During the Internet Stone Age we worked together for 7 years building PureVolume and then Virb, a DIY website builder for creatives (acquired by GoDaddy in 2013)…

Review: DJI Osmo Mobile 3

June 13, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Reviews, Gear

It all started with a wild idea—to start video recording my runs. I have done a lot of photography over the years, have a graphic design minor and originally started my career designing websites, but have never touched videography. While I have never been into videos, I have been wanting to record runs, trails, races and audaciously, trail races. The main problem with running while videoing is the stability of the shot and the ability to carry something for longer distances. The other problem—I have no idea what I’m doing…

Give: Donate Your Miles - #donateyourmiles

June 03, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Life, Give

I have a gut-level, nausea inducing, feeling in my stomach right now. I want it to remain, because those visceral sensations help shake me out of my general complacency. It’s easy to be distracted by the responsibilities around me, but when I open Twitter, or the news, I’m shaken out of it all. But what can I do? I don’t like doing things just to do them, but I want keep doing things long after the glaring need isn’t as glaring…

When the Outrage Ends

June 01, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Life

If history is any indication of the future, there will come a day when the racial protests, looting and violence will come to an end. Based on what we’ve seen in the past, there are three outcomes (maybe more?) that I see…

Running vs. Bicycling 💢🥊 FIGHT!

May 29, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Life

It’s hard for me to believe, but there was a time before running in which I bicycled exclusively. I commuted the streets of Boston, from my Somerville apartment to Beacon Street, to help build Virb with some extremely talented individuals (may it very soon rest in peace ☠️). Each day I dangerously, yet exhilaratingly, weaved through standstill traffic in Somerville and Cambridge to then ride along the Charles River, absorbing the views and eventually carrying my bike up three flights of stairs to the Beacon Street office. Bicycling was my obsession…
