When the Outrage Ends
If history is any indication of the future, there will be a day when the racial protests, looting and violence come to an end. Based on what we’ve seen in the past, there are three outcomes (maybe more?) that I see:
True, lasting, systemic change will come out of all the protests. I truly hope and pray for this to be the case, but US history doesn’t have a good track record.
The media, government and the masses get bored and go on with their lives. Sadly enough, this is a very likely outcome.
You and I take small and large, yet potent steps, in doing our share to combat racism.
Regardless of the outcome, the powerful reality is that outcome #3 yields the most impactful, immediate change and is sustainable for the long haul. There are tons of things to partner with outside of the running community, but since this is a blog where I talk a TON about everything running related, I wanted to come up with a list of ways the running community can get involved. I find that merging my personal passions, with creating change, to be the kind of action that gets me the most excited and engaged. I expect it’s similar for you.
Here’s where I need your help! Please help me compile a list, using the comment field below, of upcoming races, running organizations, athletic wear, etc. that are helping stamp out racism throughout our cities, country and the world. I’ll start compiling the list and will post it here on my site so that people can easily find and reference it.
When the outrage ends, will you be someone who continues to make a difference?
