 Apple Watch Ultra – Goodbye Garmin (forever)

December 20, 2022 by Stephen Hallgren in Life, Gear

It’s been almost 2 years since I bought a Garmin 735XT to supplement my Apple Watch for running workouts and racing. It was a painful, yet necessary, decision back then. Today, I’m pleased to announce that I am officially Garmin free once again, with one watch to rule them all.

Let me recap the two main issues I had with Apple Watch…

 Apple Watch - So Close Yet So Far

November 18, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Life, Gear

When I first started running I bought an Apple Watch to track my running, 5+ years later I’m still using an Apple Watch. I love its simplicity and while I’ve upgraded versions over the years, it has been a really solid watch for both normal wear and workout tracking. Each time I would start “growing” out of the Apple Watch–features were falling behind, or battery life wouldn’t last long enough–the next iteration of the watch would solve these problems, until this year. This year I started being coached by Nark Running & Strength and for many of my coach’s workouts it’s important for him to be able to see “splits.” Unfortunately, this Apple Watch feature is extremely sub-par and difficult to use…

Gear: Article One X Ciele Athletics Collaboration

September 03, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Gear

Ever since I bought and donned on a Ciele Athletics hat, call it an obsession, because I have not stopped running with their hats. I love their products, they are fun, functional and of really high-quality. Today, an email shimmied into my inbox and it turns out, Ciele Athletics has collaborated with Article One to bring to life a really sexy pair of “sports eyewear, inspired by late 70’s and early 80’s athletics aesthetics.” The glasses are set to start shipping next week, September 7th, 2020, but you can order them now…

Kit: My First Ultramarathon

July 16, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Gear

Last Summer I ran my first 50 mile ultramarathon, the North Face Endurance Challenge, in Massachusetts. Up until then, I had only ran two marathons and had no idea what I was getting myself into when I signed up to run 50 miles. To prepare for the ultramarathon, I read and researched a LOT. While the thorough research helped, I still didn’t feel super prepared. In my reading, I knew I’d need certain gear, but beyond that, what gear I bought was determined by people writing reviews and me hoping that their reviews didn’t suck. In our world of almost unlimited choice, it was very difficult to feel like I was doing the right thing…

Kit: Virtual Boston Marathon 2020

June 22, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Gear

It’s old and very sad news that the physical Boston Marathon for 2020 has been cancelled. How many more good things in life can the Coronavirus ruin for us runners. Not to say that this is really the worst thing that is happening right now. I wish everything could be shut down until humans start treating each other with love and equity, instead of the crap racism that’s been on for far too long. Things would change pretty dang quick if that were the case, but it’s not ☹️. Before you purchase more running clothes, I’d encourage you to donate some money to things that create lasting change in your community…

Kit: First Responder & Essential Worker Discounts

April 26, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Gear

I love seeing the outpouring of thanks for our first responders and essential workers, it would be even more amazing if it continued well after COVID-19 is gone. Either way, companies have started giving discounts or increased the discounts they already give to first responders…

My Sweet New Kicks

March 18, 2020 by Stephen Hallgren in Life

This is a tale of running shoes, Girl Scout Cookies, deception and friendship. It all began one fine day when a friend (who shall not be named) and I started talking about running gear. The conversation went to the hypothetical and went down the path what gear we’d buy if we were going to splurge on something. I told them I’d probably buy a nice pair of shoes…

Gear: Saucony Perigrine 8

April 10, 2019 by Stephen Hallgren in Reviews, Gear

The Saucony Perigrine 8 was my first trail running shoe ever and I wore them for my first 50 mile ultramarathon, which happened to be my first ultramarathon ever.

My choice to purchase the Perigrine 8 wasn’t very scientific. I started trail running this year and was mainly motivated by finding a cheap, but quality shoe, just in case this was a passing fad for me…
