Review: DJI Osmo Mobile 3
It all started with a wild idea—to start video recording my runs. I have done a lot of photography over the years, have a graphic design minor and originally started my career designing websites, but have never touched videography. While I have never been into videos, I have been wanting to record runs, trails, races and audaciously, trail races. The main problem with running while videoing is the stability of the shot and the ability to carry something for longer distances. The other problem—I have no idea what I’m doing.
I started looking for something lightweight, easy to use, and relatively cheap. I needed something that I could stash away if get tired of carrying it and work in conjunction with my iPhone 11 Pro. It didn’t take long for my searches to bring me to the DJI Osmo Mobile 3, a gimbal that fit all of my criteria. While YouTube videos convinced me of the gimbal’s ability to shoot really well, even while running, the price tag sold me. The DJI Osmo Mobile 3 costs $119 new from the DJI store and I was able to purchase a refurbished one, with a tripod and hard shell case, for $100. This seemed like a very small price to pay to level up my videography skills.
There are a lot of great features, like active tracking, gesture control, stabilization, hyperlapse, to name a few. But instead of writing about them, here are a few videos I’ve taken so far:
The hardest part for me is knowing that I’m not that great at shooting video, but if I had used that excuse to not do something in the past, I wouldn’t have become good at anything. Time and lots of practice is the only way to get better and I’m going to put it out there in its raw form.
