Gear: Smartwool Merino 150 Gloves

December 06, 2019 by Stephen Hallgren in Reviews, Gear

I have hot hands, no I’m not a hand model, my hands just overheat and sweat when I run. I’ve struggled with keeping my hands from getting too hot and then getting really cold from wet gloves. In the past I’ve rarely kept any glove on for a whole run, but even the hottest of hands can not withstand sub-freezing temperatures with no protection.

When I first got the Smartwool Merino 150 Gloves I was a little apprehensive that they were too thin and wouldn’t provide enough protection from the cold and wind. This apprehension quickly subsided after actually wearing the gloves for the first time. I’ve been extremely impressed with how thin and light they feel, while also regulating the heat from my hands and keeping them snug and dry. I’m not sure how cold it will get before they don’t keep my hands warm enough, but so far I’ve run with them in 20° F degree weather.

I really like the touch screen compatible finger and thumb, unfortunately I think they would work better if I had gotten a large instead of an extra-large. The gloves are a little loose on my hands (which I like), but because of the looseness the contact with the touch screen compatible material isn’t as reliable as it would be if the gloves were more snug on my fingers.

I highly recommend these gloves. They are light, warm, stylish, and functional for a reasonable $30.
