That Food You Crave
Is it only me who starts to crave for certain foods while on a long run? 👋
It all begins somewhere near the end of my long runs when I’ve become fatigued and ready to be home. My water has run out, my saliva is drying up into slimy sludge and I’ve burned through all extra calories causing my stomach to grumble in discontent. It is at this exact moment in which I start to get crazy food cravings, or should I say, obsessions. As soon as this obsession hits I instantly start thinking about what I’m going to eat or drink when I make it home.
As if I’m physically there, I start making a mental checklist of all the different items in the cupboards. Each cupboard is opened and inspected with the greatest of care. I move on to the freezer, which never has anything I want and then the refrigerator. Each item is conjured up in my mind in vivid pictures, while my mouth can almost taste taste the different flavors, testing whether it’s something delicious to ingest for satisfying my cravings. Sometimes in these bizarre culinary wanderings my mind latches onto the one thing I can look forward to, other times I there’s not a single thing in my house that I crave.
Finding nothing in my house, I let my mind wander over to the grocery store. Like my house, I am capable of walking every single aisle, one by one, looking at every single shelf or refrigerated area in vivid detail. At some point I will find the thing I crave. It will become lodged in my brain as an obsession and I will not be able to let it go. Each step towards home will trigger my tastebuds, each drop of sweat sliding down my face will tantalize me with the desire for refreshment.
I don’t always crave the same things every run, but here are a few specific items that are a common occurrence:
Limeade - Nothing store bought, only fresh limes, water and a bit of sugar
Odwalla Protein Drink - Usually vanilla or chocolate
🥑 🍞 🍳 Avocado Toast - This hits my savory cravings
🍕 Pizza - Doesn’t matter, any pizza will do
🍔 Hamburger - Homemade is my favorite
