Memoirs, especially running memoirs, seem to more often than not, revolve around the success of the writer and their running. As if greatness is all they’ve ever known, or if everyone did what they did, they’d be amazing too. Running Home is not one of those books. As the chapters unfolded, I kept wondering when I’d get to the part about running, but with each chapter I became more and more engrossed in the narrative of Katie’s life. Her writing went deep into my own heart and put words to my own inward battles.

As a father of 4 I could feel the pain and confusion that she had gone through with her own father. I desperately want my children to receive from me the things they desire and need. I could understand the struggle we all go through between sacrificing our own desires for those we love, while also figuring out how we don’t lose ourselves in the process. I was also convicted about how I don’t put enough priority on deepening my relationship with my parents.

Eventually, I got to the parts about running, but by that point it only helped augment a deeper more poignant narrative that was already happening. I cared less about whether Katie won her races and more about how it shaped who she was. This was the type of running memoir that I wanted and didn’t know I needed and I’m so thankful that she shared her life in such a deep and raw way.
